The Men’s Retreat is for men who want to have fun in the beauty of God’s creation while going deeper in their faith. Since 2009, the mid-November retreat has been led by Fr. Steve and two to four other priests at Camp Wingmann, the Episcopal Church Camp near Avon Park, Florida. Attended by two to three dozen men, many of whom return year after year for rest, fellowship, and the renewal of their souls, the retreat includes great food and lodging in the camp lodge or in cabins, all of which are rustic, but air conditioned. The camp lake-front offers kayaking, canoeing, and swimming, as well as fishing. There is a high-ropes course with zip-line available, the conquering of which is quite satisfying, but no one is compelled to participate. Even for those who do not climb, cheering on others provides a sense of accomplishment. There are many opportunities just to enjoy the beauty of the Camp and the easy-going fellowship of men doing such things as tossing a Frisbee or joining in a light work project. The different priests who come on the weekend each present one part of the overall theme. In the past few years, each retreat has focused on a particular man in the Bible, such as Jacob (who became Israel); St. Peter (the Rock) who encouraged followers of Jesus to become “Living Stones”; David, the boy shepherd who became King; and the story of Joseph. In 2016 the retreat focused on the book, Fathered by God, by John Eldredge, which brought you through the six stages of a man’s life. Friday night includes a movie after dinner. Saturday night includes prayers for healing, and then a campfire. Sunday ends with Eucharist and a commissioning to go forth as men of God. The retreat is open to men of all ages within and beyond the Episcopal Diocese of Central Florida.
